Common questions

How do I work out what an appliance costs to run?

Convert the power to kilowatts, multiply by the hours it runs, then multiply by your price per kWh. A 2.4 kW heater running for 1 hour at 33 c/kWh costs 2.4 × 1 × 0.33 = about 79 cents.

Does a heater use full power the whole time it is on?

No. Once the room warms up, the thermostat switches the element on and off. In a typical room a heater might run at full power 50 to 80 percent of the time, which is what the "time at full power" setting allows for.

Where do I find my electricity price per kWh?

Look on your power bill for the usage charge, shown in cents or pence per kWh. If you are on a time-of-use plan, use the rate for the time the appliance usually runs.

Is it cheaper to heat a room with a reverse-cycle air conditioner?

Usually yes. A reverse-cycle air conditioner moves heat instead of making it, so it delivers around 3 to 4 kW of heat for every 1 kW of electricity. That makes it roughly a third of the running cost of a plug-in electric heater.
